On Monday mornings, the sounds of trumpets and tubas can be heard echoing through the streets of Eccles. The world renowned Halle Orchestra has been delivering music lessons to our students. Student have learnt the skills required to be a part of an orchestra such as reading music, following instruction from a conductor and learning about pitch and tone which will all come together in a performance at the end of the year.
The Halle4brass project teaches how to play brass instruments and the acquisition of this new skill is then connected to life skills. When earners come up against something they cannot play, which happens in most cases from very early on, they are taught strategies to overcome these difficulties and these strategies in turn can be used in other areas if their lives. For some, progress is quick but others struggle to even make a sound on their instrument. The system praises not only progress but also hard work and one of the outcomes with all the learners, even the struggles is how when they achieve a basic outcome for example making their first sound, there is a corresponding sense of achievement and a positive effect on their self esteem.
