Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is additional funding provided to schools to support specific groups of learners who may be at risk of underachievement. Schools are required to report on the funding received and how it is allocated to benefit students.

At Arbour Academy, many of our learners are dual registered with their mainstream schools. In these cases, Pupil Premium funding is often used by their home schools to support their placement with us. However, we do receive Pupil Premium funding for eligible single-registered learners and for Children in Care through Personal Education Plans (PEPs).

To ensure all learners have access to the support they need, we implement a Pupil Premium budget plan that directly benefits those eligible for the grant. Additionally, the progress and impact of funding for Children in Care are monitored separately to ensure they receive the necessary resources and support.

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium at Arbour Academy

The Pupil Premium is additional funding provided to schools and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) to support disadvantaged pupils—those who have been registered for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years (Ever 6 measure) or have been looked after by the local authority.

For the 2024-2025 financial year, the Pupil Premium funding rates for secondary-aged pupils are:

  • £1,050 per eligible pupil (those who have received free school meals in the past six years).
  • £2,570 per pupil for looked-after children (LAC) or children who have ceased to be looked after.
  • £340 per eligible pupil for children of service personnel

For looked-after children, funding is allocated to the Virtual School Head (VSH) in the local authority responsible for managing and distributing the funds to ensure appropriate support.

At Arbour Academy, dual-registered students' Pupil Premium funding is received by the home school and is often utilised in supporting the placement at Arbour Academy.

For single-registered students, the full Pupil Premium Grant is received directly from the Local Authority and allocated to ensure these learners receive the support they need from Arbour Academy.

These funding arrangements ensure that all eligible learners at Arbour Academy benefit from the Pupil Premium to help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our Aims for the use of Pupil Premium

  • Provide pastoral care and mentoring to help students develop positive relationships and social skills.
  • Encourage peer support and collaboration through structured group activities and team-building opportunities.

Resilience

  • Equip learners with the skills and strategies to manage challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Deliver targeted interventions that support emotional well-being, self-confidence, and independence.
  • Promote a growth mindset, encouraging learners to take pride in their progress and celebrate their achievements.

Emotional Response

  • Offer therapeutic support and counselling services to help learners understand and regulate their emotions.
  • Create trauma-informed learning environments that provide safe, calming spaces for students to thrive.
  • Develop and implement strategies that support mental health, well-being, and emotional resilience.

Through these aims, we ensure that Pupil Premium funding is used effectively to remove barriers to learning, promote inclusion, and empower our students to achieve success in school and beyond.
