Pupil Premium

Use the drop down below to find out more about Pupil Premium and view our Pupil Premium Strategy to find out how this is spent and what impact this has had.

What is Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium is additional funding paid to schools / PRUs in respect of their disadvantaged pupils (pupils who have been registered for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years (Ever 6 measure) or are looked after by the local authority at any point.) The Pupil Premium was initially introduced in April 2011 when schools received an additional £488 for each of their pupils eligible for free school meals.

In April 2012 this was increased to £623 and from April 2013 was increased to £900 per eligible pupil.

As from April 2014 the amount per pupil is £935

Children of service personnel receive a lower amount of £300.

Children who have been in local-authority care for 1 day or more also attract £1,900 of pupil premium funding. Funding for these pupils doesn’t go to their school; it goes to the virtual school head (VSH) in the local authority that looks after the child. VSHs are responsible for managing pupil premium funding for looked-after children With dual-registered students, arrangements for Pupil Premium Grant are carried out on a case-by-case via an initial agreement at admission meeting with our partner schools (who directly receive the funding in the first instance) and subsequent invoice system - with funding then transferred to the Centre. With single-registered students, the full amount of Pupil Premium Grant is received by the Centre directly from the Local Authority. The above arrangements came into effect as of September 2014.

Our Aims for the use of Pupil Premium

Through prudent use of the pupil premium allocation Arbour Academy aims to:

  • Ensure all Pupil Premium pupils leave Arbour Academy having made at least expected progress if not accelerated progress if their attainment is lower than average.
  • Have high expectations of all pupils including meeting at least target grades in all subject areas where it is possible for them to do so.
  • Improve attendance / punctuality for those eligible for pupil premium.
  • Increase enjoyment / engagement of the school curriculum.
  • Encourage parental participation in supporting achievement and attainment.
  • Raise aspirations in school and beyond.

How do we decide how the funding is allocated?

Arbour Academy is committed to allocating the pupil premium funding in a way that will have the greatest impact on attainment and engagement. Funding has been allocated based on enhanced tracking of pupils and on research and evidence from other schools and organisations. Targeted interventions and support are based on a needs analysis that has helped to identify priority classes, groups or individuals.

Teachers are also able to apply to help students both inside and outside of lessons. To ensure effective and efficient use of pupil premium funding, activities and interventions are evaluated regularly including the impact of progress of pupils at the end of each academic year.

Through regular tracking we can identify individual children who are not making the expected rate of progress. When this occurs the school has a set procedure to investigate potential barriers to learning and implement interventions to address these.
