Free School Meals For All!

School meals are critical to learners’ well-being and readiness to learn.

Research has shown that children who eat breakfast and lunch at school rely on school meals for half of their daily energy intake.

With food insecurity rates skyrocketing due to the economic hardship triggered by the coronavirus pandemic – one in four children are estimated to be struggling with hunger. School meals are essential to more children than ever.

At Arbour Academy, we are pleased to announce that all learners are provided with a daily snack and school meal, free of charge, irrespective of free school meal eligibility. This is our way to support families with the cost of living crisis and to ensure that no child goes hungry.

If you wish to discuss your child's dietary requirements, please contact the school office on 0161 4643483.

Packed Lunches

Students are welcome to bring their own lunch to school if they choose.  A packed lunch should provide about a third of their daily nutrient requirements at lunchtime. This means they need food that is going to provide them with enough energy, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals.

A healthy packed lunch should contain a variety of foods:
  • A starchy food, such as bread, rolls, pitta bread, naan bread, potatoes, rice, noodles.
  • A good source of protein, iron and zinc such as meat, fish, beans, nuts or eggs.
  • A good source of calcium such as milk, cheese, yoghurt or fromage frais.
  • And one portion of fruit and one portion of vegetable or salad to provide all the other vitamins and minerals.
